Despite the global pandemic, the Macau Tourism Office is full of optimism and is making bold plans for the upcoming 2021: it will host large-scale and spectacular events of a global scale.
Confirming its status as a "city of festivals", Macau has planned several large and popular tourist events in the coming year. Thus, at the end of January, the Fringe Festival will be held for the 20th time, proclaiming the motto "everyone is an artist". 18 incredible programs will be demonstrated in different parts of the city, allowing the audience to become not only observers but also to show their own creativity by presenting their works. The performance "The Distance Between the Sea and Us - Puppet Theater" will turn garbage collected on the beach into puppets and tell improvised stories about the ocean. "The Actress's Riddle" will turn the audience gathered in the bar into suspects and make them take part in the search for the killer. Dance performances, readings, and various seminars are also planned.
The main event of February will undoubtedly be the celebration of the Chinese New Year of the Metal Ox, which will come on February 12. Traditionally, the streets of Macau will be filled with processions with dragon and lion dances, gods of luck, happiness, prosperity and longevity, symbols of the 12 zodiac signs, which will present spectators with souvenirs. Parades with colorful platforms will also be held in honor of the New Year.
Spring will be marked by the Macau Arts Festival, combining theater, dance, music and circus performances. Cantonese opera, classical and contemporary music, Chinese drama - performances will be held throughout Macau, including in the charming corners of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 2019, Art Macao was held for the first time and was incredibly successful. In 2021, it will turn the city into a world-class meeting place for culture and art for the second time. So far, the organizers are keeping secret what exhibitions will be held as part of Art Macao, but given the experience of the 2019 events, something grand is expected.
Sports fans have not been forgotten. They are waiting for the Macau International Regatta (January), the World Volleyball Tournament (May), the Macau International Dragon Boat Championship (June) and the International Basketball Tournament (September). And the culmination will be the Macau Grand Prix, which will bring together the best racers from around the world for the 68th time in November.
Of course, these are only the most significant events planned for 2021. But the variety of entertainment for every taste can be a decisive factor in choosing Macau for your first trip in a long time.
