The Croatian tourist capital Dubrovnik has been named the World's Leading Sustainable Destination 2025 by the World Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Awards.
Dubrovnik's Respect the City Initiative is a pioneering model for managing over-tourism while preserving cultural heritage and improving the quality of life for residents. Launched in 2017, this strategic, interdisciplinary project positions Dubrovnik as a leader in sustainable development in the Mediterranean, balancing economic growth with the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old Town. Through innovative technology and coordinated management, the city has introduced Croatia's first electric vehicle sharing scheme, implemented an AI-based visitor forecasting system, and launched the Dubrovnik Pass, which integrates access to attractions and visitor flow management.
The award was presented to hundreds of global leaders in sustainable tourism who gathered in Dubai for the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards 2025. The VIP ceremony took place at Terra, Expo City Dubai, and recognized individuals and organizations that are accelerating change in tourism with a positive net return.
«We are deeply proud of this global recognition. Dubrovnik is a city of extraordinary beauty and heritage, but it is our duty to ensure that it remains a vibrant, thriving home for our citizens. In recent years, we have taken decisive steps to balance tourism with everyday life, guided by data, cooperation and respect for our UNESCO-listed Old Town. This award confirms that our approach is working and encourages us to continue. I thank our residents, partners and international colleagues who support our vision. Dubrovnik will continue to lead by example, showing that sustainable development and cultural dynamism can go hand in hand,» said Mato Franković, Mayor of Dubrovnik.
